Pleasant Places provided comprehensive landscape and hardscape construction for American Gardens, helping transform a prominent downtown Charleston property into a new public garden and pedestrian destination connecting Meeting Street and King Street. Located among some of Charleston’s most historic cultural and architectural landmarks, the project required a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail appropriate for its highly visible setting.

Our scope included the installation of approximately 18,000 square feet of architectural pavers, more than 100 tons of Kafka Granite pathway material, extensive landscape installation, sod, trees, shrubs, flowering plants, groundcovers, site furnishings, and the detailed construction of pedestrian pathways, plazas, gathering areas, and garden spaces throughout the property.

The landscape was designed to create the character of an established Charleston garden from the day it opened. Mature trees establish scale and canopy throughout the property, while layered shrubs, hedges, groundcovers, ornamental plantings, and seasonal color define individual garden rooms and soften the extensive hardscape. These landscape elements were carefully integrated around the fountains, pathways, seating areas, lawns, and surrounding architecture to create a cohesive experience throughout the property.

Construction within the confined downtown site required extensive coordination of deliveries, material staging, manpower, pedestrian access, and sequencing. The project continued to evolve during construction, with 18 change orders incorporated into the work without an extension to the established completion deadline. Maintaining that schedule required proactive planning and close coordination between Pleasant Places, the owner, design team, general contractor, and other project partners.

Pleasant Places self-performed its contracted scope with the exception of tree delivery, providing direct control over scheduling, workmanship, and the integration of the landscape and hardscape components. From large-scale material installation to the final planting and finishing details, our crews worked to ensure every element contributed to the overall character of the garden.

The completed American Gardens is more than a collection of landscape and hardscape improvements. It is a new public space within Charleston’s historic urban fabric—creating a landscaped connection between two of the city’s most important streets and providing residents and visitors with a setting for walking, gathering, events, and everyday enjoyment. As the trees and gardens continue to mature, the project is positioned to become an increasingly significant part of downtown Charleston for generations to come.
