Charleston Place Hotel

Pleasant Places provided comprehensive landscape, hardscape, irrigation, drainage, and site construction for the transformation of The Charleston Place Hotel’s primary entrance and arrival sequence. Encompassing approximately one acre of exterior improvements in the heart of downtown Charleston, the project was designed to elevate the arrival experience while preserving the timeless character expected of one of the city’s most recognizable luxury hotels.

Our scope included extensive hardscape installation, site preparation and fine grading, drainage infrastructure, irrigation systems, Silva Cell installation, mature tree installation, ornamental landscaping, shrubs, groundcovers, seasonal color, and the detailed finishing work required to bring the surrounding landscape and arrival areas together as one cohesive environment.

A significant component of the project involved establishing a mature tree canopy within a highly developed urban setting. Silva Cell systems were installed beneath portions of the hardscape to provide expanded soil volume and support long-term root development while maintaining the structural requirements of the surrounding paved areas. These systems were carefully coordinated with drainage, irrigation, utilities, paving, and finished grades before the landscape could be completed.

The planting design incorporated mature trees, layered evergreen material, flowering shrubs, groundcovers, ornamental plantings, and seasonal color to create the appearance of an established Charleston landscape. Plant material was integrated throughout the entrance, building perimeter, pedestrian areas, and arrival sequence to soften the architecture and hardscape while creating a refined transition from the surrounding city into the hotel.

Construction presented significant logistical challenges because The Charleston Place remained fully operational throughout the work. Hotel guests, valet operations, deliveries, events, pedestrian access, and daily hotel activities had to continue while major exterior construction occurred immediately outside the primary entrance. With extremely limited staging space, materials and equipment were carefully scheduled and delivered as needed, requiring precise sequencing and continuous coordination between Pleasant Places, the general contractor, hotel operations, ownership, and other trades.

From underground infrastructure and Silva Cells to finished paving and final planting, each phase had to be completed in the proper sequence while protecting completed work and maintaining access to the property. Pleasant Places self-performed its contracted scope, providing direct control over workmanship, manpower, scheduling, and the integration of the landscape, hardscape, irrigation, and drainage components.

The completed project establishes a renewed sense of arrival at The Charleston Place, combining mature landscaping, refined hardscape, and carefully integrated infrastructure to complement the hotel's architecture and five-star vision. The result is an exterior environment designed not simply for opening day, but to mature gracefully and remain an important part of the guest experience for decades to come.
