American Gardens: Creating a New Landmark in the Heart of Historic Charleston

Finished in November of 2025 in the heart of downtown Charleston, American Gardens introduces a new public green space designed to connect people, places, and some of the city’s most historic surroundings. Located between Meeting Street and King Street and near landmarks including the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Charleston Library Society, the garden creates a meaningful pedestrian connection through the city while providing a beautiful new setting for gathering, events, and everyday enjoyment.

For Pleasant Places, American Gardens represented an opportunity to help build something that will become a lasting part of Charleston’s landscape. The project combined extensive hardscape construction, landscape installation, detailed site improvements, and careful coordination within one of the city’s most active and historically significant areas.

The transformation required a substantial amount of sitework and material installation within a relatively compact downtown footprint. Pleasant Places installed approximately 18,000 square feet of architectural pavers, creating the plazas, gathering areas, and pedestrian connections that establish much of the garden's structure.

More than 100 tons of kafka granite were incorporated into the project to form distinctive pathways throughout the property. The natural character of the granite complements Charleston's historic surroundings while providing a durable surface intended to withstand years of pedestrian activity.

These hardscape elements were integrated with an extensive landscape installation consisting of mature trees, shrubs, ornamental plantings, flowering material, groundcovers, and sod. Together, the planting palette softens the surrounding architecture and hardscape while creating layers of texture, shade, seasonal color, and visual interest throughout the garden.

Site furnishings and other amenities were incorporated throughout the space to transform the property from simply a pedestrian connection into a destination. Seating areas and gathering spaces encourage visitors to slow down, enjoy the landscape, and experience downtown Charleston from a different perspective.

The significance of American Gardens extends beyond the materials installed or the challenges overcome during construction. Its greatest value will be measured by how the space is used in the decades ahead.

Charleston is a city defined by its architecture, gardens, walkability, and public spaces. American Gardens adds another piece to that fabric by creating a landscaped connection between Meeting Street and King Street and introducing a new place for residents and visitors to experience the city.

What was once simply a space between destinations has been transformed into a destination of its own.

The garden provides an environment for everyday walks, quiet moments, community gatherings, cultural events, and special occasions while strengthening pedestrian connectivity through this part of downtown. As the trees mature and the landscape continues to establish, the character of the garden will only become richer.
